Saturday Evening Dances at the Westport Town Hall

A story by DEBORAH G GREENLEAF from 1960s

Pictured is my grandfather Norman S. Greenleaf playing his beloved violin at the Westport Island Town Hall Saturday night dance. Accompanying him on piano is Verlie Greenleaf.

My sister Wendy Greenleaf and I vacationed on Westport Island every summer from birth to our college years with our grandparents Norman and Bertha (Bee) Greenleaf.

Our family lineage on Westport dates back to the late 1600s. Our 3rd great grandfather was Squire Samuel Tarbox, Westport's first Selectman after the island's incorporation as a town in 1828.

Saturday night dances at the Town Hall were much fun. Loved putting on our summer dresses and being part of a wonderful summer tradition. We enjoyed drinking orange soda out of glass bottles at intermission. Dancing with our father, Everett Greenleaf, while listening to our grandfather Norman play the violin is a memory we hold dear.
