Description
The Katahdin I Steamboat was built in 1896. The steamer had a wooden hull, was 111 feet long, with an upright compound engine and drew a draft of 6.5 feet of water. The Katahdin was owned by Coburn Steamboat Company in Greenville.
The Katahdin was in service for 18 years hauling passengers, freight or towing booms of logs before she caught fire while towing a boom of logs off Sandbar Island on May, 13 1913.
The Katahdin's captain, Charles J. Robinson, ran her aground where she burned at the water's edge with the skipper and crew escaping unharmed.
As of 2013, the Katahdin II was still in service for passenger excursions.
