A Tour of Sanford in 1900

Images from the Sanford Historical Committee

Sanford's majestic homes and shops of the turn of the twentieth century offer more than a look at interesting and sometimes magnificent architecture.

The buildings also provide a window into some of the families who lived in Sanford and Springvale, who built the homes and shops, and who helped to move the town from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Sanford was the second largest town in Maine, with more residents than a number of Maine cities. It was the fifteenth largest community in the state.

This collection of images provides some clues to what Sanford looked like as well as to activities that took place in the town.
