Portland lawyer Frederick Wheeler Hinckley (May 26, 1878-May 11, 1933) lived at Clyfdale Villa on Sawyer Street, South Portland. He also designed and built the Sylvan Site development in South Portland, and served in the Maine Legislature.

The home was owned originally by Dr. Waldo T. Skillin, a Portland-area physician for whom Skillin School on Westcott Street is named.

Directions to the painter of the photograph stated "stucco mulberry" and "stucco with a crimson tint (purplish), trimmings dark crimson (garnet), stone bluish, greenish, dark yellowish, roof burn sienna, chimney drab, door bright ochre."
