On February 18, 1971, the eyes of the World Alpine Ski Racing community were focused on Sugarloaf Ski Resort in the western Mountains of Maine.
The Alpine race series known as the World Cup of Alpine Ski Racing was holding one of its events on Sugarloaf's Narrow Gauge ski trail.
Since 1955, the Narrow Gauge had been the site of many local and national races, including the NCAA Championships, but hosting this series of competition would bring international fame to the race trail and the mountain it was on.
