The Women of Eastern Fine Paper

Text by Ian Jesse

Images and audio from the Maine Folklife Center

Male employees dominated the pulp and paper industry and many of the women who worked in Eastern remembered the overwhelming presence of men.

Women, however, were present at Eastern Fine Paper since the early twentieth century and they took on various jobs including sorting rags, office work, cutting paper, and shipping orders. Their jobs were never far from the jobs of men; the two genders, more often than not, worked in a shared space.

This section tells the story of the women of Eastern Fine Paper and the work they did throughout the company's history in this male-dominated industry.
