Eben Calderwood on lack of action, Louisiana, 1863

Description
Pvt. Eben Calderwood of Co. H of the 21st Maine Infantry wrote to his wife, Mary, in Vinalhaven that the regiment had been on several long marches, but had not fired guns in any action. He noted that the gunboats had done all the firing.
Calderwood, who was 39 when he enlisted in November 1862 also told his wife, "I believe this Rebelion has got to be put down."
He reported on what he was cooking and noted that he was eating better since "we have messed by ourselves."
He said he would tell her about pillaging cotton and beef and about the destruction of property and "robery" when he got home.
