Description
Eben Calderwood, Co. H., 21st Maine Infantry, was 39 when he enlisted and left at home a wife and four children, ages 2 to 11.
He wrote to his wife, Mary, on Feb. 1, 1863 to tell her the regiment had arrived in New Orleans after a pleasant trip of 11 days from Virginia.
He added, "They say the enemy is 9 miles from where we shall be in camp but there is any amount of soldiers here."
He was writing on his 40th birthday but expected to have no fun because he had no money.
