Description

Leonard Valentine, a private with the 25th Maine Infantry in Virgina wrote to his parents in Westbrook describing spring, with grass growing and the peach orchards in bloom.

He wrote, "before the war broke out this must have been a nice country, but now all is desolation and ruin."

Valentine served with his unit for nine months.
