Description

Musician William B. Adams of the 5th Maine Regiment, a native of Raymond, reported to his sister Dorothy that he was "pretty well tired out -- having a great deal of fighting and short living."

He noted that 12 members of the regiment had been wounded or killed in the past three days and half the regiment lost since the war began.

"There has been some very hard fighting in this place and Gen Grant is proposing to seize it."
