Description

This Soldiers' Memorial for the 25th Regiment Maine Volunteers Company B, notes that the unit was mustered into U.S. service on September 29, 1862, by Captain Samuel N. Dana at Camp Abraham Lincoln, near Portland.

The 25th Regiment Maine Volunteers was organized to serve nine months, and left Portland for Washington D. C. on October 16 1862. The 25th was assigned to the Third Brigade of Casey's Division, and on October 26 moved to a camp on Arlington Heights, immediately in front of the city's earthworks defense line, where it remained until March 24, 1863.

The 25th then moved to Chantilly Virginia, on the Little River turnpike, where it performed picket duty before returning to Arlington Heights on June 26. The 25th left for Portland on June 30, and on July 10 was mustered out of service by Captain Francis Fessenden, of the 19th U.S. Infantry.
