Description

Marshall Phillips, a solider in the 5th Maine Regiment, wrote to his wife in Auburn following the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863.

He wrote, "I am tired of war, lonesom, and homesick it seems as if they mean to kill off all the three years men before they send out any conscripts to help us we have to fight against superior numbers as we did last summer."

Phillips, who was a shoemaker, enlisted in 1861 and served throughout the war.
