Description

Marshall Phillips, a soldier in the 5th Maine Infantry, wrote to his wife, Diana, of Auburn, about the Battle of Bull Run that was fought on July 21, 1861.

The letter, written from Alexandria on July 24, gives details of the battle.

Phillips wrote, "..our division of from 50 to 75 thousand men started last saturday night about twelve oclock to take a place called bulls run near Manasus Junction we was defeated in takeing it I believe mostly in the bad management of ofisers ..."
