Description

James E. Mitchell, a sergeant in Co. C of the 10th Maine Regiment, wrote to Persis Blanchard of Cumberland from Relay House, Maryland, near Baltimore.

He reported that the company was guarding the railroad, especially the track and bridges.

He noted that this was his ninth letter and he had received only two and "them were about as good as none."

He described his tent and his hope that they could build barracks soon.

The salutation is "Dear Sister Persis," although the two are not siblings. Persis Blanchard kept Mitchell's letters, sometimes signed "Ned," tied together in a bundle.
