Description

J.E. Mitchell, a soldier in Company C of the 29th Maine Regiment, wrote to his sister, Persis Blanchard of Cumberland, about his journey from Maine to New Orleans.

He comments that the ship tried to stop in Key West for coal, but was denied a berth because of a smallpox outbreak among the soldiers.

He notes that the soldiers are living in little "dog" tents. He writes, "I wish you could see our camp two hundred and fifty little tents three feet high."
