Description
Stationed in Washington, D.C., Marshall Phillips of the 5th Maine Regiment wrote to his wife, Diana, of Auburn, about the surrender of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Phillips noted that the streets of Washington were "so illuminated that you could reed a newspaper in the streets any whare in the vicinity of the war department."
