Description

K.B. Sewall wrote from his home in Mobile to his son Somers in Portland about the latter's education. Somers Sewall (1843-1867) had been attending Williston Seminary in Easthampton, Massachusetts, and hoped to continue doing so.

His father, however, suggested he try a school in Maine. K.B. Sewall, a native of Edgecomb, and his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, a native of Portland, had lived in Mobile since 1839, but many of their children were educated in Maine where Lucretia's mother still lived. Lucretia Sewall and the children spent most summers in Maine.

Sewall mentioned the excitement in Mobile at the fighting at Fort Sumter that began the day he wrote the letter, April 12, 1861.
