Description
The "Westport Ferry" is pictured leaving from Wiscasset for Westport Island with a 1938 Pontiac. The ferry was a scow guided by a cable that ran along the bottom of the Back River to keep the scow on course in the river's strong tidal currents. This ferry carried residents, visitors and vehicles on and off the island for over 50 years.
The small motor boat visible alongside the ferry is operated by Luther Cromwell. The boat powered the ferry along the guide cable.
