Description
In the later years of mining slate, companies preferred to do tunnel mining rather then the open pit method used until the early 1920s.
The four men in this photograph are using a movable pneumatic drill to loosen slates from the walls; dynamite would usually be used to prior to the men drilling, and also for the purpose of loosening slate from the mine walls. This photograph is first in a series of nine images depicting the slate mining operations done in and around Monson during the 1950s.
