Description
In the South side of Norridgewock, the best known of the hotels was the Sawyer House and Livery Stable located on Maine Street between Mechanic and Hotel Streets. As of 1845, when Norridgewock was the shire town of Somerset County (1807-1872) the town had three clergymen, four counselors at law, and three practicing physicians. The town had three houses of entertainment, or hotels, which catered to travelers and offered the best of accommodations. History books say that a "Mr. Sawyer has built a large house of entertainment in the South Village, which is well-furnished and good attention is paid there to the wants of travelers." The hotel burned in the late 1800s. Charles Sawyer, a professional photographer whose pictures are highly collectible today, was born there in 1868, later moved to nearby Farmington and opened a studio in c1904. He died in 1954 and is buried in Norridgewock at a family plot in the Riverview Cemetery.
