Description
The S.D. Warren Company was established at the site of the Cumberland Mills in Westbrook when Samuel Dennis Warren of Boston purchased and transformed them in 1854. The company was later purchased by Sappi Fine Paper NA.
Though not Westbrook residents, Warren and his family were philanthropic forces in the community. Warren was known for paying fair wages and caring for his employees, offering them loans to support ventures like purchasing homes and educating their children. Workers not living at home lived in company boarding houses.
The caption reads, "S.D. Warren Paper Mill, Westbrook, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
