Description
In 1876, Poland's Ricker family opened the Poland Spring House, which soon became a major attraction for the elite as a hotel that included dining, guest rooms, dance and photography studios, music and writing rooms, a pool room, a barber shop, a music hall, a bowling alley, and more.
Shortly after moving to Poland, Jabez Ricker and his family opened the Wentworth Ricker Inn in 1797 to provide accommodations for merchants and other travelers. The property developed into a resort over the next century, boasting a spring with health-inducing water and a variety of recreational activities. The Ricker’s land later included their highly productive and iconic water bottling facility and spring house. The Poland Spring House was put to various uses throughout the 20th century, including as a training center for the federal Job Corps program in the 1960s, but burned to the ground on July 3, 1975.
The caption reads, "Poland Springs House, Poland Springs, Maine."
