Description
Black and white photograph of a gravel road paralleling the Ossipee River in the town of Cornish, Maine, with a vintage automobile and houses in the background. This 1937 photo was taken in southwestern Maine near the photographer's hometown. Old-style guardrails appear along the river and on the curve. Only a few wires adorn the utility poles in an era when rural electrification was still incomplete and certainly no cable television lines were strung, there being no televisions. The photo is one of a large series taken to promote Maine as a vacation destination.
