View down Main Street, Lubec, ca. 1930

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Pleasant Street crosses Main just beyond the bandstand on the left and the Civil War Monument Park on the right; both still in place as of 2011, the bandstand since rebuilt. The first bulding on the right was the American House boarding, the next the Higgins building also offering rooms, both gone. The red-roofed structure, across Water Street, is the Mowry building, which remains in use. The dark red building with a white crenalated pilaster on the right side of Main but facing Water Street was Lubec Banking and Trust, and the house just beyond the trees was office to long time Lubec physician Dr. Eben Bennet. Both these structures also remain in place as of 2011.

In the distance is Lubec Channel and beyond, Campobello Island, New Brunswick. This postcard bears a message on the rear, to “Sister” from “Nettie,” dated October 10, 1935, but was not posted directly. Trimmed on the sides and bottom, a faint pencilled comment across the top of the image reads, “hard to cut this to fit this envelope.” Colored lithographed halftone postcard, 7.9 cm high x 13.1cm wide.
