Description
A merger of many can plants around the nation created the American Can Co. in 1901. Moving from the hand-cut and soldered cans of the 19th century to high speed machine manufacture, American Can completed its large plant in Lubec in 1908 and became a major local employer. Peak output reached 350 million cans annually, mostly for regional fish packing. The Lubec factory functioned about 55 years. Abandoned, it was razed in the late 1980s shortly after this photo was taken.
