Henry Knox to M Hays, 24 May 1801

Contributed by The General Henry Knox Museum

Description

Letter from Henry Knox to a friend in Boston, describing his return to Montpelier in Thomaston, and inviting the recipient's daughter to visit. He praises the ship's Captain Kelleran as well as his vessel (probably the Betsy) as well as the charms of the area.

Knox built Montpelier in 1794, when he retired as George Washington's first Secretary of War. He intended to maintain the mansion primarily as a summer home, from which he would base several business interests.
