The Sieur de Monts, a 155-foot steamer built in Philadelphia, took passengers and freight to the Dark Harbor wharf.

This service was critical to the development of the southern end of Islesboro, known as Dark Harbor. The Islesboro Land and Improvement Company owned much of the southern end of the island and was interested in selling lots to wealthly families of Boston, New York and Philadelphia. The Company built the Iselsboro Inn and the Dark Harbor wharf in 1891 to facilitate the process.

The Sieur de Monts served Dark Harbor between 1901 and 1904.

Printed on postcard view is, "Dark Harbor, Maine Landing. Steamer Sieur de Monts."
