Description
Photograph and advertising card of Orange Frost Small outside of his store at 553 Greenwich St. in New York City's Greenwich Village. The photograph is part of a family record book created by Orange Frost Small (1842-1909) for his son, Robert Orange Small (1872-1951).
Orange Frost Small was born in Letter B, Maine, in 1842 and spent most of his youth living on a farm in Andover, Maine. He served in the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment, Company C, from 1862 to 1863 before being discharged for insanity. Small returned to Maine and worked as a teacher, store proprietor, and farmer. He married Mary Moubery of New York City and the two had Robert Orange Small in 1872, before Mary died in childbirth in 1874.
Small lived in various towns around Maine, including Andover, Falmouth, and Paris, as well as in New York City from 1881 to 1890. He married twice more, to Eliza Douglas in 1875 (the two divorced in 1890) and Emily Wilson in 1894. Between 1880 and his death in 1909, Small was admitted four times to the Maine Insane Hospital and ultimately spent over six years in the institution. He died there in 1909.
