Description
Photograph captioned "R.O. Small held by his mother," referring to Robert Orange Small (1872-1951) and Mary Moubery Small. This photograph is part of a family record book created by Orange Frost Small (1842-1909) for his son Robert.
Robert Orange Small was born in Andover, Maine, to Orange and Mary Small. Mary Small died in 1874 during childbirth, and Robert spent his youth living alternately with his father, his stepmother Eliza Douglas, and various siblings of Orange Small in Maine and Berlin, New Hampshire.
Orange Frost Small was a store owner and farmer and suffered from periods of mental instability which resulted in four separate stays at the Maine Insane Hospital. Robert Small built a stable and successful life for himself as an educator and administrator in Massachusetts.
Orange Small kept journals on and off throughout his adult life, with portions addressed directly to Robert. In these and other writings and correspondence, he chronicled both the events of his life and his thoughts on religion, sin, morality, and family. These writings provide an intimate peek into his life and mind.
