Covid quilt, 2020

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Climate change, epidemics, and structural racism impact people experiencing poverty and non-White people at higher rates. Judith Walsh of Peaks Island pieced this quilt from the scraps of the more than 1,000 cloth face masks she helped make from March through December 2020, during the COVID-19 Pandemic. As the fabric scraps piled up Walsh recognized there was a quilt in all the remnants.

Making face masks and the quilt was about “mending her heart, which was broken by the state or our nation, by the mounting number of deaths from the Coronavirus, and by the unheeded demands for social justice.” She embroidered the surface with words and phrases pertinent to pandemic times like “Covid,” “BLM (Black Lives Matter),” and “Vote.”
