Description
Cushman Baking Company was a Maine staple from 1914 to 1962. Initially located in Portland, the business expanded, reaching its peak in the 1940s. Jean Anderson (b. 1924) started working for Cushman’s at age 18 in 1942. After six months, she became Cushman’s first female delivery route driver. Two years later, Cushman’s promoted Jean to route manager, where she taught other women to drive their own routes.
This cotton, leather and plastic delivery cap was part of her uniform.
