Description
A brown printed silk foulard (lightweight silk) ensemble gives the illusion of separates, but the blouse and jacket are in fact one piece. The bodice' shirtwaist (blouse) is made of two layers of light silk, one tissue weight silk and second layer of pintucked sheer chiffon. It is gathered at the waist with an excess of fabric creating the fashionable pigeon-breasted silhouette. The outer bodice, which resembles a jacket, is made from a printed silk, with a V shaped collar trimmed with lace and brown velvet ribbon.
The skirt has a trumpet shape, which was popular in the first decade of the 20th century. Other features include a deep ruffle at the hem, inserted lace, and the same brown velvet trimming. There is an attached inner skirt made of brown cotton, with a white silk taffeta ruffle at the bottom for volume.
An interior grosgrain waist tape reads "S.E. Thomas ; Portland." The dress is associated with Sarah E. (Oliver) Thomas (1858-1939, originally from Starks in Somerset County.
