Description
Margaret Greaney Newell (1856-1943) and her husband Lawrence Newell (1846-1940) lived at 106 Bedford Street in Portland. They emmigrated from their home in Ballintleva (Ardrumkilla), Belclare Parish, Tuam, County Galway, Ireland to Portland in 1882 and settled in the West End of Portland.
Lawrence worked on the railroad and Margaret saved the money. Eventually, about 1925, they were able to pay $10,000 in cash to have a house built the way they wanted it, which became 106 Bedford. it was the last house to be acquired by University of Southern Maine for their campus.
