Description
Coopers Mills, Whitefield's northernmost village, is nestled between Jefferson on the east and Windsor on the west. The road, Route 17, was called Main Street as it traversed a mile-long section through the village. The William Turner house (on the left at 32 Main Street), the Baptist Church at the top of the hill (47 Main Street), Coopers Mills School (41 Main Street) and a barn at 29 Main Street, comprise this cluster of buildings near the Jefferson town line.
Newell Avery (1845-1934) at one time owned the barn. Will Turner (1875-1958) later turned it sideways, and in the 1970s the Bond Manufacturing Company was located there. The small building at the right was on the Somerville Road.
In the early 1960s the State of Maine rerouted Route 17 in order to bypass Coopers Mills. The new Route 17, as it exists in 2017, would be on the left side of this photograph. The old road visible here, is Main Street.
