Falmouth Neck deed of ownership, Portland, 1764

Description

This official deed of ownership is for Enoch Freeman in contract with John Erving, the Governor of Boston, Massachusetts. It was drafted by Freeman on October 1st, 1764, and received by Erving on November 4th of the same year.

The land promised was formerly a part of Falmouth, known as Falmouth's Neck, but is currently a portion of downtown Portland. The land roughly spans within the confines of modern Portland's India, Congress, Center, and Fore streets.

Enoch Freeman, in his lifetime, held 22 positions of public trust. A few of his positions included Postmaster, Justice of the Peace, and Selectmen of New England.
