Exhibition: Sagadahoc County through the Eastern Eye -- Selections from the Penobscot Marine Museum

Portland, ME: Maine Memory Network is Maine's online digital museum, administered by the Maine Historical Society (MHS) with over 270 Contributing Partner institutions. The Penobscot Marine Museum (PMM) is a Contributing Partner which has 345 items and 5 exhibits online. A new exhibition Sagadahoc County through the Eastern Eye: Selections from the Penobscot Marine Museum – on display at the MHS Shettleworth Gallery and on Maine Memory Network – highlights PMM's Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company postcard collection from Sagadahoc County.

The Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company employed photographers who traveled throughout New England and New York State each summer, taking pictures of towns, cities, vacation spots, tourist attractions, working waterfronts, local industries, and other subjects postcard recipients might enjoy. The company printed cards by the millions in Belfast into the 1950s. While old postcards often evoke nostalgia, they are also important historical records. Images reveal the character and pulse of Sagadahoc County's communities during the early decades of the 20th century.

Keven Johnson, Penobscot Marine Museum Photo Archivist, adds:

“The Sagadahoc exhibit is the sixth county themed exhibit we have created from the vast Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company Collection. Connecting with local historical societies and historians to learn the stories behind the photographs has been a successful formula in the creation of these exhibits. I am so appreciative of the effort and research of these people and institutions in getting these stories down and for the diligent work of PMM's Photo Archives Assistant, Liz Fitzsimmons in the curation of the exhibit. This particular exhibit faced some significant hurdles due to COVID-19 and so it's especially satisfying to see it completed on the Maine Memory Network and the walls of the Maine Historical Society.”

In addition to the in-person exhibition, the online version can be viewed on Maine Memory Network.
