Description
W.B. Adams of Co. K of the 5th Maine Regiment wrote to his father in July 1864 that the Rebels were marching toward Washington and the rumor was they had 40,000 soldiers.
The 5th Maine had just returned to the Capitol. Adams wrote, "Expect we shall have some sharp fighting and marching."
He thought it might be good if the Rebels destroyed the Capitol and the President "for we have got so we don't think but little of him." They had not been paid in 5 months.
