Description
John Marshall Brown, with federal troops at Folly Island, South Carolina, writes a light-hearted letter to his sister, Nellie (Ellen), in Portland, telling her that there is nothing new to report from his Civil War post. In February 1864, Brown was serving as Assistant Adjutant of Volunteers under Gen. Albert Ames (also from Maine). The next month, Brown would resign from this post to serve as Lt. Col. for newly formed 32nd Maine Regiment.
In the letter, he discussed Ellen's trips to the theater and notes, "I am getting quite enthusiastic in my french reading ..." He also mentioned the etiquette of social visits; sending palmetto trees home to Maine; and horses.
