Peleg Wadsworth letter about Penobscot Expedition, July 31, 1779

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Peleg Wadsworth (1748-1829) wrote this letter to his wife, Elizabeth Bartlett Wadsworth, from the area around Castine, about the disposition of troops around the Penobscot River.

Wadsworth was part of an American force trying to rout the British, who had occupied the area at the mouth of the Penobscot River and were building a fort there. They planned to establish a loyalist colony as well as use the position for a naval base and coastal trading.

The battle began July 25 and continued until August 15.
