Description
9 Bodwell Street (formerly 3-5), Sanford, ca 1900. Built before 1889, it was owned by Calvert Longbottom, a machinist who was also the local representative of the Cunard White Star Company.
At that time many of the officials and operatives working at the Goodall mills had been recruited from England. Travel back and forth was not uncommon and the steamship company most often used was Cunard, thus the reason for a representative in Sanford.
The sign by the front door advertises sailings between Boston and Liverpool. In the background is the belfry of the old Longfellow School.
