K.B. Sewall list of items to take to Mobile, 1865

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

K.B. Sewall, who had escaped from Mobile in August 1864, leaving his family behind, had permission to return in May 1865, after the Civil War ended, but needed special permission to take necessary goods to his destitute family.

Sewall prepared a list of the items he wanted to take from New Orleans to Mobile and sought permission from military authorities to do so. The items included food and clothing.

Sewall and his wife, both natives of Maine, had lived in Mobile since 1839. His wife and children traveled frequently back to Maine where some of the children went to school. Once the war began, travel became impossible.
