Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Writing on the occasion of his daughter Eunice receiving a diploma, K.B. Sewall expounded on the necessity to keep studying, reading, and learning.

Sewall (1807-1865), a Maine native, graduate of Bowdoin College, and lawyer in Mobile, Alabama, wrote to his eldest child, Eunice, "I see in looking back now, that when I left college I was a novice - I did not appreciate the use of an education - and the most that has been useful to me I have learned since..."

Eunice (1837-1918), her siblings and their mother were in Portland, where the children went to school and their mother, Lucretia Day Sewall (1813-1897), offered company and support for her widowed mother. Sewall asked his daughter what she thought of each of her siblings and whether they "will make any thin of themselves, with the aid of yourself & their parents."

The family had frequently been separated. They moved to Mobile in 1839, but Lucretia and the children often were in Portland. especially during the summer and fall.
