Charles H. Towle, Weld Street, Dixfield, ca. 1920

Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

Charles H. Towle (1877-1957) founded Towle's Hardware when he purchased a small hardware store from Almon Stockbridge in 1911 on lower Weld Street. He is standing in front of the three storied building he built around 1915, which boasted the only elevator in town. The elevator was manually operated with ropes. Though a new modernized facility was built in 2008, Towle's Hardware has continued to serve Dixfield and surrounding towns as a family owned business for over one hundred years.
