Kiah Sewall request to correspond with Lucretia Day, New York, 1835

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Kiah B. Sewall (1807-1865) wrote from New York to Lucretia Day (1813-1897) of Portland to tell her that he wanted to get to know her better, had written to her father seeking permission to correspond with Day and hoped she would agree.

He wrote, "I should even now trouble you with a question more direct, but circumstances forbid -- It would be neither just to yourself nor to me ---"

Sewall added a postscript: "This is intended for no eye but your own -- if you can not reciprocate my sentiments -- burn it!!"

The couple married in May 1836.

At some point, Sewall wrote in pencil on the back of the letter, "My first Letter to Miss Day."
