Description

This image shows Philip Andrews feeding pigeons on Main Street in Dixfield in the 1890s. The grist mill and power station are behind him and sit on the bank of Webb River. The grist mill was built in 1879 by Albion Marsh and then sold in 1893. Several owners followed, but Albion Marsh retained control of the electric power dynamo that was housed in the cellar of the grist mill. The dynamo was run by water power from the Webb River.

Dixfield had its first electric street lights in the 1880-90s. Philip Andrews was in charge of running the electric lights which would go on at dark and off at eleven PM. The Howe Wheelwright Shop is also in the background.
