Joseph G. Butler of Presque Isle mustered in with the 7th Regiment Infantry in Augusta on August 21, 1861. Butler was born in 1838 and enlisted at the age of 23.
Lt. Butler and his men served in Baltimore, Maryland, and Alexandria, Virginia. Butler was killed in battle at Fredericksburg on May 3, 1863 and is buried in Orneville Cemetery, Township of Orneville, Piscataquis County.
