Description

This formal portrait of Alice Lucas Towle, ca. 1920, shows her in the high fashion of the day. She was born in Canton, Me., the daughter of William and Lizzie Lucas and attended Canton schools. She then graduated from Farmington State Teachers (Normal) College and taught for a time in Byron. Working as a bank teller for the Rumford Falls Bank and Trust Company, she met her husband Charles H. Towle and lived in Dixfield for over fifty years.

Charles and Alice Towle owned and operated Towle's Hardware Store from 1911 until the early 1950s when their son John L. Towle assumed ownership. She kept the books, waited on trade, and was quite expert in tin knocking and crimping stove pipe. She was an active member of the Dixfield community including Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Order of the Eastern Star (OES). Alice was also known as an excellent seamstress.
