Description

Vivian Milner Akers painted this portrait of Albert J. Stearns in 1948. The frame is hand-made, gilded and embossed with minute colored detail by Akers.

Albert J. Stearns, a prominent Norway man and former Oxford County Judge of Probate, was born at Center Lovell, Oct 8, 1873, son of Joseph F. and Marcia Ellen Russell Stearns. He attended local schools, graduated from Bridgton Academy and attended Boston University Law School.

Stearns served as a second lieutenant with the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War.

He was admitted to the Maine Bar Association in 1899 and practiced law in Norway until his retirement in 1966. He served as Oxford County Judge of Probate from 1936 until 1952.

As Republican, he served in the Maine State Legislature in 1907 and the State Senate in 1911 and 1913, Judge Stearns was a member of the Board of Selectmen of Norway from 1903 until 1905. In 1909, he was a member of Gov. Bert M. Fernald's Council and from 1927 to 1929 he served on the State Board of Charities and Corrections.

He married Alice M. Wheeler on Oct. 24, 1900. After her death, in 1948, he married Theresa Richmond.
