Great Falls of the Androscoggin River, Lewiston, ca. 1975

Contributed by Lewiston Public Library

Description

The Great Falls of the Androscoggin River are one of the most known landmarks of Lewiston and Auburn. They were the driving force that powered the mills and therefore development of the neighboring cities. In earlier times, they were used as a trading and fishing spot by native American tribes. The Cowan Mill, which burned down in 2009, is the brick building to the right.
