Corner Detail of St. Mary's Parish, Lewiston, ca. 1970

Contributed by Lewiston Public Library

Description

St. Mary's Parish, located at 88 Oxford Street in Lewiston, is the third oldest Catholic Church in the city. Though not yet fully built, the church opened on Christmas Day, 1927, in the "Little Canada" neighborhood where French-speaking Canadian migrants had settled to work in the area's textile mills. St. Mary's was an active parish until its closing in July 2000 due to declining population. It was then redeveloped into the Franco-American Heritage Center, a performing arts and cultural facility.
